My post yesterday was just my own small, six-year-old view of the Berlin Wall. Today I link you to The Big Picture's photograph retrospective.

The most impressive pictures, to me, are the set that you click on for a comparison -- the same shot, 1989 and 1999.

But many of the shots are lovely for their own sake, even if you aren't as taken with the history as I am.

Whoops! Stray quotation mark -- thank you for letting me know, and should be fixed now.

My parents did their best to impress on me how big a deal it was -- they had first fallen in love in Berlin, in 1980-81, and so they knew many things about it firsthand. It was hard for me to grasp, so young, but I remember it vividly.

You might enjoy watching the comedy movie "Goodbye Lenin". It does an excellent job of showing walled-in East Germany and the differences after it fell.

The premise is that an East German woman fell into a coma while the wall fell, when she wakes, her kids are told not to tell her so they try to keep up the facade for as long as possible. It's ridiculous, but genuinely funny and a great historical look at the differences.
