Anime Expo: Cosplay Pictures
Here's the picture post for Anime Expo 2010! (Thank
rachelmanija for reminding me to upload these before I forgot. :D ) These are pretty much all pictures of cosplay of various kinds.
As a teaser, here's the most impressive cosplay at the con: San, the Wolf Goddess, and the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke. (They also had a bit in the Masquerade, where they demonstrated that San could actually ride on the wolf's back, as in the movie, in these costumes.) The costumes were impressively lovely and detailed up close, but you can see some of that in the picture:
Lots and lots and lots of images behind the cut.
Above: This was another Masquerade entry that we saw in the halls on the last day. It's Riku and Sora from an imagined Kingdom Hearts world based on the movie Atlantis. (By "imagined," I mean... well, one of the conceits of Kingdom Hearts is that Sora is hopping from one world/alternate universe/thing to another, and each one is themed, usually on a Disney movie property. He usually adjusts somewhat to the various worlds: in the Little Mermaid world, he becomes a half-dolphin merman, in the Classic Disney world he gets a Steamboat Willie-type look, in the Tron world he gets all cybernetic, in the Lion King world he becomes a lion cub, and so on. There has [thus far, anyway] not been a Kingdom Hearts world for the movie Atlantis, so this is the cosplayers doing a 'what if' and coming up with this: steampunk for Sora and an Atlantean robe thing for Riku. I find this kind of cosplay particularly cool because it combines the craftsmanship and thoughtfulness of good cosplay with the creativity of taking an idea and running with it.)
Above: Four characters from Final Fantasy XIII: Sazh (complete with baby chocobo on his head), Vanille, Serah, and Snow. Sazh and Vanille are two of my favorite characters in the game. (My other favorite is Fang, not pictured.)
Above: Two mech and/or body armor pilots. Don't know the series, but the costumes were pretty darn impressive.
Above: An (understandably!) edgy Chell with a companion cube, plus an anthropomorphic GLaDoS, both from Portal. They were going about in a group with...
Above: Gordon Freeman and a headcrab, from Half Life. Freeman is carrying his crowbar here, but he also had a pretty cool gravity gun. This Gordon Freeman was at AX last year, and I gotta say, he really found a look that worked for him!
Above: Jiraya, the Fourth Hokage, Hinata, and Sasuke, from Naruto. It's kind of hard to see in the small picture, but the Fourth Hokage had a sparkly LED ball thing to represent the rasengan, and Sasuke had genuine Sharingan contact lenses.
Above: Same group, plus Naruto.
Above: Link from Twilight Princess. There was also a Navi (not to be confused with Na'vi) running around going, "Hey! Listen!", which is very funny if you know Ocarina of Time and less so if not.
Above: Three Akatsuki. There were a lot of Akatsuki running around the con, probably because it's a fairly easy costume to do if you have a source for the robe, but some of them—like this group—put real work into it too. (My other favorite, which I did not get a picture of, was a Deidara cosplayer who had a hand sculpt of Deidara's creepy mouth-in-the-palm-of-his-hand.) (Well, and I was also charmed by The Littlest Akatsuki, who couldn't have been more than three or four.)
Above: Mario, Bowser, and one of the carnivorous plants from Super Mario Brothers. (Alas, I did not get a picture of the gay Mario and Luigi, but picture Mario and Luigi as done by the Village People and you would not be far off.)
Above: Roxas and Axel from Kingdom Hearts. The Axel had a particularly nice chakram thingy. (No, that's not a euphemism.) There were a lot fewer Kingdom Hearts cosplayers this year, although there were still plenty of Soras and several pairs of Axel and Roxas. (Axel and Roxas are often seen together, being as they are canonical BFFs and probably the biggest pairing in the fandom.) Axel and Roxas, along with the rest of Organization XIII, are examples of canonically male characters who are almost always cosplayed by women. (Sora is almost always cosplayed by guys. Riku's more of a tossup.)
Above: Kakashi, from Naruto. It's hard to see in the picture, but the cosplayer had made a quite charming Icha Icha. I also like the Pakkun plushie.
Above: Somebody from Transformers! (No, I'm not sure who; Transformers was never one of my fandoms. Cool costume, though.)
Above: Gaara, from Naruto, looking appropriately surly.
Above: Pac-Man and one of the ghosts! I do love this picture.
Above: Garnet and Zidane from Final Fantasy IX. I noticed a lot more FFIX cosplayers this year. I wonder if some of that is spillover from Final Fantasy: Dissidia? (Dissidia is a canonical crossover game for the Final Fantasy series, and also a gift to crossover slashers throughout the fandom. Zidane seems pretty popular in Dissidia fandom, too.)
Above: Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII. I gotta say, part of why I love Final Fantasy XIII is that it has a variety of excellent female characters.
Above: Squall from Final Fantasy VIII.
Above: Red XIII from Final Fantasy VII, and a moogle which could be from any of several Final Fantasy games. I really appreciated this way of doing Red XIII: stylized, of course (for those who don't know, Red XIII, real name Nanaki, is a big, red, sentient wolf-lion-creature in the games: a quadruped and not at all anthropomorphic except in the sense that he has at-least-human [and possibly better] intelligence), but still clearly and obviously the character. I really like cosplay when it's interpretive in interesting ways!
Above: A cactaur from the Final Fantasy series. The poor person in there must have been boiling whenever he (or she) was outside! (Although not as boiling as Vincent Valentine cosplayers, of which I didn't see any this year. Vincent wears head-to-toe black leather, including gloves, and covers that with a heavy red cloak with a collar that covers all the way to his cheekbones. Whoof. I always feel sorry for Vincent cosplayers walking to the convention hall in the heat.)
Above: Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, Squall from Final Fantasy VIII, Aerith from Final Fantasy VII, and Yuna from Final Fantasy X. I was particularly taken by Yuna's summoner's staff.
I got permission to take all these pictures, and they're uploaded with no identifying information attached, but if anyone passing through recognizes themselves in these pictures and wants them down, I'll do so.
And that's it. Lots of fun!
I'll post about the Masquerade tonight or tomorrow, I think. (I found most of the cool Masq sketches on YouTube! Hooray for YouTube.)
