(no subject)

One thing I hadn't mentioned, simply because I kept forgetting it was coming up so soon: I'm attending the Medieval Association of the Pacific 2010 conference this weekend. Then next week I'm going back to horse camp! Hooray!

Really, even though they're totally separate events with totally different people, they feel like part of the same thing: a break from work and normal life to spend a lot of time focusing on something I love. And doing it with other people who love the same things.

So anyway, the conference schedule is here. I'm really interested in "Philosophy and Spirituality" and "Irish, Welsh and Norse Literature," and I'm really really interested in "Perceptions of Powerful Women" and "Naming, Knowing and Remembering Monsters," but those last two are unfortunately at the same time so I'll have to pick.

I'll be taking notes. Would anyone be interested if I were to post the notes on the sessions I sit in on?

Ooh, lucky. Though I have to say, I'm not sure how anyone can get one and a half hours out of "Responses to the Plague in Early Medieval Europe". I mean, how long does it take to say, "Oh shit, oh shit, we're all going to die?" (though, come to think of it, a colleague managed to spend quite a lot of lunch today explaining how his wife fended off a rabid dog with a cheese sandwich in a French carpark in the early 70s while he was stuck partly in and partly out of the luggage space of a prototypical hatchback, so I suppose it's all in the way you tell them).

From my limited experience attending three prior MAP conferences (and presenting at two), the program committee works very hard but papers fluctuate a *lot* in quality. Sometimes one is pleasantly surprised, and sometimes one is unpleasantly surprised. I fear one of my two presentations counted towards the latter for people listening, but I was rather young....

Yes, please post notes and your impressions of the conference. I find it very interesting that you're involved in keeping up with the field, despite your current existence outside the academic environment.
