...because I had no Internet on Friday.

By way of [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda: Movieline: Seven Threatened Fanboy Responses to Twilight
Good grief, sez I; it's perfectly fine to dislike the Twilight movies—I am not particularly a fan!—but good grief. Girls don't have cooties. It will not make your dick fall off to watch a movie for and about girls. Seriously.

[personal profile] recessional: Plagues in Your Postapocalypse, or: Learn to be Terrified of Pertussis
Because the plain fact is, in history, people died a lot more. Especially children, pregnant women, the elderly and the poor. In history, diseases were deadly. And we didn't even know what they were. And in history, every disease, every accident, every mischance, was potentially the end of your life.

And if you're writing a post-apocalypse where we lose our tech, same thing.

Saving this to think about for the Eshthali books. I do have a plague in the recent past of the book, and it's viewed as sad but normal, but I think I need to pay more attention to the impact of 'ordinary' mortality in a lower-tech society.

By way of [livejournal.com profile] ozarque: J. L. Hudson, Seedsman
Saving this for when I want to start seeds in the spring.

The Guardian: Patrick Stewart: The Legacy of Domestic Violence
The situation was barely tolerable: I witnessed terrible things, which I knew were wrong, but there was nowhere to go for help. Worse, there were those who condoned the abuse. I heard police or ambulancemen, standing in our house, say, "She must have provoked him," or, "Mrs Stewart, it takes two to make a fight." They had no idea. The truth is my mother did nothing to deserve the violence she endured. She did not provoke my father, and even if she had, violence is an unacceptable way of dealing with conflict. Violence is a choice a man makes and he alone is responsible for it.

Jezebel: Age of Innocence? 3-Year-Olds Think They're Fat
Indeed, according to a study by University of Central Florida psychology professor Stacey Tantleff-Dunn and doctoral student Sharon Hayes, nearly half of these pre-schoolers "worry about being fat." And a third of those tested said they were dissatisfied with their appearance.

Sad, sad, sad.

What Earth Would Look Like With Rings Like Saturn
Okay, this is glorious. I almost want to add rings to my world. I'm trying to think if there's any reason I couldn't, actually.... (They wouldn't know what it was. It'd probably be the Arch or something.)

The Very Best of Cats Chillin'
This just made me grin like a loon.

Surprised Kitten (video, worksafe)
This, too.

Swadesh List (Wikipedia)
Saving this for conlang purposes.

Topless Robot: Computer Graphics From a Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away (video, worksafe)
A brief discussion of how the computer graphics in Star Wars: A New Hope were made. Very charming.

Muppet Bohemian Rhapsody
You've all seen this, right? Right.

LOVED the post-apocalyptic post, the cats, and the Muppets, which hadn't seen before. Thank you! :)

Wasn't the Stewart piece good? I mean, harrowing, but great.

It was a brilliant piece.

I want to take "Violence is a choice a man makes and he alone is responsible for it" and, I don't know, paint it on a billboard. Write it in skywriting. Something.

Nice collection of links!

... but I really wanted to say again how much I enjoy your mood icon theme. I just keep on waiting for you to experience more moods so I can see more of them. Loved this one :-)

I'm so glad you like it! It was fun to make -- and it always makes me smile. (It helps that the Elfquest Elves are so very expressive. It wasn't hard at all to find good images for a variety of moods.)

And yes, Joyleaf seemed perfect for 'calm.' I always loved her, for all that she had died before the series even started!
