I already did. It turns out to be surprisingly easy: tell people what you want to be called, and they generally oblige!

(Okay, so my full, legal name is the same as my full, legal birth name, but still.)

People think I am insane, because I did this. My legal name is Margaret Mary Ayres. I have convinced everyone to call me Sidny (I thought it was cute to spell it funny when I was fifteen). Everyone does it. People rarely question it.

I believe very strongly in calling people what they want me to call them[1] as much as possible/practical.

[1] Not "what they want to be called", since that may vary based on who's calling them or what context they're being called in.

I think the hardest thing is figuring out what you want to be called instead. I have a group of friends who I have fallen out of contact with now, for the most part, who know me as "flower". And my little sister tried out "Samantha" for a summer, before deciding it wasn't really right.

I suppose I would change it if I could since I don't particularly like my name, but I have never been able to identify another one that felt like 'me'.
