I had a similar experience in 7th grade. I am guessing I was not as isolated as you were, but I still spent most of my time reading and was never one of the popular kids. I met a new girl (well, we were all new in 7th grade since it was the first year of middle school, but she hadn't come from my elementary school) and we became best friends after bonding over Diane Duane's "So You Want to be a Wizard."
In the way of preteens, we later had a falling out and a massive fight (which was largely about her becoming friends with a popular girl), then made up and were friends again the next year. I didn't see her for ages (went to different high schools) and we actually reconnected and met up just a couple months ago when she was in Indy for a friend's wedding. It was really great because we were hanging out and chatting as if we had been keeping in touch for the past 10 years.
