I know a number of people reading this are going both to MMP and to the Steampunk Ball. Would any of you be interested in doing some steampunky craftwork with me while we're in Denver? I've got gears to spare in a variety of sizes, leather scraps and leather punches, glass beads and pieces of polished semi-precious stone, and some medium-sized bits of velvet, along with glass/metal epoxy and beading tools (good for affixing gears to things if you don't want to use glue). I think I have some very simple handsewing supplies (like needle/thread and pins) too, though I'd have to find them and confirm. (Nothing you'd want to sew a garment with, but enough to make, say, a pouch, or to stitch gears onto an existing piece.)

Among my projects will be retrofitting a hideous parasol into a steamy parasol, making some jewelry pieces, and making over a Duck Hunt gun into a pirate's aether pistol (not to self: find small glass globe; if you'd been thinking, self, you would have grabbed a couple of clear glass tree ornaments when they were on sale, but no such luck). (If I can find an appropriate stick for it, I'll also be making [livejournal.com profile] jmpava a walking stick, but no luck so far on that either.) I'd love some company!

Ooh Ooh! Pick me!

Any chance you bought a glue gun? I need to affix stuff to my goggles.

I need to make a necklace. I think it would be great if it had a gear on it and hung from a clear string or from leather. I might also want to glue things to my goggles. I will try to remember to pack my glue gun.

I've got extra little gears and one big gear. I'll trade you for the use of your glue gun. :]

I didn't get a chance to pick up a glue gun, but hooray for Des to the rescue. ;)

I also have an assortment of gears, as well as various thicknesses of leather cord and very thin beading wire. Whee.

I'm hoping that you're checking your bag. Although really, what harm could a glue gun do when there's nowhere to plug it in?

If you're taking the stuff by airplane, make sure that you can bring the stuff as carry-on, or check in the luggage. They're weird about stuff you can/can't bring.

Yeah, I'm checking the luggage, for certain. We're also taking a couple of bottles of wine, and that'd be a no-no under the liquids clause.

Also, some of the gears have sharp, serrated edges, and I think the TSA would have a long and irritating conversation with me about that. ("So why are you carrying a serrated chainring?" "Victorian costume." "...what?") :D

I was thinking about this last night. They might question me. But really, it's just a couple old bike gears and some tiny washers. How can I pre-check to see if they'll care?

Try this list. I'm not sure if airlines have their own separate lists or not, but they should be adhering to the TSA list.

I was mostly thinking that the glue might give you some trouble, but sharp gears will probably look weird too.

My gears aren't sharp. Just old bike gears and a few washers. They'll look weird to the x-ray so I'll put them on top in a clear bag. Hopefully it won't be a problem.
