Oh! On a happier note, we got our first shipment of Pioneer Organics vegetables this week.

For about $34, we got:

3 large beets
1 bunch broccoli
1 bunch carrots
1 1/2 lb Yukon Gold potatoes
1 lb parsnips
2 large grapefruits
3 granny smith apples
1/3 lb snap peas
2 Bosc pears
3 kiwis
2 lb bananas
1 bulb garlic
1 head romaine lettuce

(This is how much we get every two weeks; it's the 'small' order.) Everything is organic. Everything that can be grown locally is, although, it's winter, it's Washington, it's root vegetables, apples, and pears. The greenery won't be local until it gets a leetle bit warmer. (Theoretically it'd be nice to Eat Local, but I just don't have it in me to eat nothing but parsnips and potatoes until May....) Niftily, you can tell them what you never, ever want (for us, that's okra -- which I hate -- and Brussels sprouts -- which the boy doesn't much like), so there was a chance of nice surprises, but not much chance of really nasty ones.

Plus I added three-quarters of a pound of bison sirloin for an additional ten or so dollars, because I'm trying to edge us over to organic/free-range/cruelty-free/I'm-okay-with-killing-them-I-just-don't-want-to-torture-them-first meat.

The food seems to be very good quality. I haven't cooked with the veg yet, but the bananas and grapefruit are extremely fresh, high-quality and tasty. I've buried the root veg in buckets full of sand and put them on our covered back stairs (where they will be outdoors and thus cool, but not rained on and thus rotten). I feel like a pioneer woman.

I think so! Their coverage in/around the city seems to be pretty good. The website (http://www.pioneerorganics.com) has a place where you can put your zip in and it tells you what delivery is like for that area. (They also just leave it where you tell them to, which suits me fine -- the less random human contact, the better!)

You can also choose whether you want an equal ratio of fruits and vegetables, more vegetables than fruit (what we have, because I like to cook with veggies, but fruit makes nice snacks), more fruits than vegetables, or all fruits, or all vegetables. Which is kinda nice.

Anyway, the website gives a pretty good overview. I can keep you posted on whether future shipments are similarly rewarding. And, uh, I didn't want to put this in the main post, because I totally don't want to sound like I'm shilling and I posted because I'm excited not because I'm trying to convert, but if you do decide you want it, if you'd list me -- cora.anderson@gmail.com -- as a referral when you sign up, that'd be awesome. Wow, that does sound really awesome! Thank you for the link! (And jeez, no, you don't sound like a shill, and of course I'd say you referred me, chica. I think we'd have to wait at least a month or two for the budget to allow it, but MAN, I would LOVE easy access to good organic fruits/veggies.

It's nice, because a) we compared the prices to the non-organic produce we bought last time we went shopping, and it wasn't really very much more, and b) it comes RIGHT to my door, which suits my lazy butt just fine. (I like going to the farmer's market, but I actually get off my ass and do it almost never.)

I'm having fun planning what to do with what I got. It is nice to get out of a rut by dint of going 'beets, wow, what does one do with beets....?'

(And thank you! I like talking about what I like, but I'm so paranoid about looking like I get, uh, a kickback. Although I'm such small-fish it's sort of unlikely that that's going to be a problem.....)

Oh god, I like going to the farmer's market, too, and Pike Place Market is RIGHT down the street, practically, but we never get up in time and all the tourists and then you have to walk back carrying all the stuff and blahblah....RIGHT TO MY DOOR sounds awesome. (We actually ordered some stuff from Homegrocer.com back when we were in Ballard, and they were pretty okay. But that was, uhh, 2002, or something.) And there is actually a farmer's market here in the Hill, but it is 1) tiny and 2) it sucks.

....aww jeez, well I wouldn't've heard about it at all if you hadn't posted, so why shouldn't you get a little somethin-somethin out of it? And it's not like you're trying to get me into Amway or Herbalife, or something. (One of T's relatives tried to get him into Amway once. Heh.)

....so did the Insomnia Fairy visit your house too? I'm awake because if I am not pretty much sitting upright I start hacking like an old-time lunger, as the slang had it.

Hee! One of my friends' parents, long long ago, was into Amway. She was fine, but my parents would sort of flinch and make themselves scarce whenever they came to pick her up.

I've heard good things about Amazon Fresh for groceries, too, but I've never actually used them. (jmpava's mother is blind, and therefore is kind of an expert on delivery groceries places, since it's much easier to shop online than in a store if you can't see what's on the shelves.)

...hah, yes. Well, the boy is at the sleep clinic to see why his oxygen levels while sleeping are not very good, and I have a hard time remembering when I should go to bed when I don't have an occasional interruption to remind me. (Which is funny, because he habitually stays up later than me, but having someone around knocks me out of my reading-things-on-the-Internet trance frequently enough that I remember that I ought to at least try to sleep.) Also, it's so quiet and lovely at this time of night....

I know! It's a great feeling. There's a great quotation in the Alice Sheldon bio where she talks about flying down the DC expressway at something like three ayem to turn in her work and feeling like nobody and nothing could get at her....I'm a total night owl and it's usually when I do my best work, to the despair of most people who know me.

Yeah. He snores pretty badly, which, if that were all, I'd just buy some earplugs. *grin* But he also wakes up groggy, is much too tired for the sleep he gets, and generally doesn't rest well. We both agreed for years that he should see someone, and then he finally did and they pretty much immediately confirmed that something is wrong. So today's session is 'what is it, and how to ameliorate it.' Fingers crossed.

Yes, exactly! the hours between 1 and 6, I feel like no one has any expectations of me, no one's going to bother me, they're mine. And that's so nice. It's not even that I have a lot of people demanding things of me during the day, but it's not as inherently private and solitary.
