I've been having a lot of fun with the Amazon DRM-free MP3 store, which has more files all the time (I just did a check for some of the ones I hadn't been able to find when it first came out, and most of them are there by now). I always said that I'd be happy to buy my MP3s if they were reasonably-priced and DRM-free, and it's nice to find out that I was telling me the truth.

To that end, and since they're so damn affordable, I'd like to get some recs for individual songs, and if you rec 'em, I'll go download 'em. How's that for a music pimping opportunity! Some rules:

1. The song should ideally be something I can find on Amazon's MP3 downloads. I'm not going to ask you to go check, but really obscure filk artists or import-only albums are probably not there, for instance.
2. It should be one or two (three max) individual songs -- I don't want to have to pick at random from an artist's entire oeuvre, and I'm not shelling out for a whole album unheard.
3. I like most genres, but I don't care for country much at all. I also prefer things with a fairly good beat, and faster is better than slower, but if you really like a slow ballad, go ahead.
4. I am so not going to make fun of your taste in music, because mine sucks.
5. If you rec something I already know, I might ask you for another rec.

It's more fun if you watch the video first:

Well...it is free, and Annie Lennox's music usually makes me happy, who I turn up when I am not too pleased with the world around me.. you might download Sing. I haven't heard it, but good cause and all of that sort of thing.

Could you please define "faster"? An example would help. There is a lot of stuff out there I have no interest in unless I'm on a dance floor (I even like rap when I can't really hear the sexist, violent, foul-language lyrics, and I can grind to the funky beat), and I prefer when I'm listening to music for it to have good lyrics. So could you please give a few examples of "fast" that pleases you?

Try out my podcast and see if you like anything on there. These are all songs that the artists give away on their websites for free, but if you like them, I recommend that you buy them.

"The Mind Is Evil" by Clearlake, on the album Cedars. Not very fast, but the lyrics resonate with anybody who's ever wanted to take out their brain and shake it while yelling "Would you cut that out?!"

Everything else I might recommend is either something you've almost certainly heard of or something far too obscure.

Oh, and "Fidelity" by Regina Spektor if by some chance you haven't heard it.

Oh, i don't think they meet your rules exactly (i'm pretty sure one of them isn't downloadable on Amazon and the other might not be) but did you take a look at the Freezepop - Less Talk More Rokk and Victims of Science - The Device Has Been Modified videos i posted a couple weeks back?
