madduckdes, 2gouda4u and triath. Good times! It helped that Coppelia was recital my class did did in ballet when I was nine or so -- I only took ballet for a couple of years, but that happened to be the piece we chose. (I was a mechanical doll.) So I already knew something of the story. Also, after the fact I remembered that I'd read The Sandman, a considerably more macabre short story on which Coppelia was based, in college.
It seems perfect for a steampunk reinvisioning. ...So perfect that I'm positive it's been done.
