Went to see Coppelia with madduckdes, 2gouda4u and triath. Good times! It helped that Coppelia was recital my class did did in ballet when I was nine or so -- I only took ballet for a couple of years, but that happened to be the piece we chose. (I was a mechanical doll.) So I already knew something of the story. Also, after the fact I remembered that I'd read The Sandman, a considerably more macabre short story on which Coppelia was based, in college.

It seems perfect for a steampunk reinvisioning. ...So perfect that I'm positive it's been done.

You'd probably appreciate all the Tales from Hoffmann, upon which Coppelia was based. Many have also been adapted into operas. And if I'm not mistaken, is the source from which the Nutcracker was also adapted. Puppets coming to life were hot stuff back then.
