We figured out why the wii isn't working.

...

One of the cats (probably Alys, the troublemaker) bit through or otherwise snapped the sensor bar wire.

...

EDIT: This is an easily and relatively inexpensively fixed problem. Probably a sign to invest in something that tastes nasty to kitties to put on various things that oughtn't be chewed, though.

Told you they were demons! Fuzzy and oh-so-adorable, but fiends none the less. Like many creatures: It's a good thing they are cute. I'm sorry they broke your toy :(

Is ok -- it's pretty replaceable. The sensor bar is basically just a fancy-schmansy set of two LEDs, so we can replace it with two of anything that emits light, including two tea lights if worst comes to worst.

Still! Kitties! Being bad!

Good thing they're so cute.

Actually, tea lights work. Your lights do have to emit in the IR range, but the fire from the tea lights works just fine :)

That was me... FWIW, the sensor on the wiimote is actually just a lowres camera, with an IR filter in front of it.

I think it needs to be IR LEDs. Also, you'd have to figure out how to connect it to the Wii system which would probably means it'd be easier to buy one than to solder the two pieces together.

You can probably buy a new sensor bar off ebay. I've seen them on Amazon.

It actually doesn't have to connect to the Wii system, which is why candles work -- the sensor bar just emits, it doesn't receive. At least, according to what I've found out online (haven't tested it yet, though I will next time we want to use the wii, because we have a whole box of tea lights from IKEA).

That said, I'd probably buy a new sensor bar on ebay, just because candles are a PITA.

Candles + kitties = an accident waiting to happen

I have to say I was shocked when I learned the truth of the "sensor" bar during a class project this year. (You'd think I'd know better, right?)

On the nerdy side you could use a Wiimote as your mouse if you wanted to.

....wait, _Alys_ is the troublemaker? Methinks you assigned the wrong names to the wrong cats ;)

at least your cats cause *normal* problems... our cat Socks (the smart one) has figured out how to turn off our wireless internet... So every time she is feeling unloved, she walks over to our router, pokes it till it turns off, then waits for Matt and I to come running to fix it. Probably easier to fix then your wii, but still rather annoying!

Aren't cats cute??? :o)
