I hate finding out that authors/artists/whatever that I enjoy and (used to) respect are actually pushy jerks and kind of bigoted.

Bleh!

I'm kinda of a pushy jerk, but you are willing to BAKE Christmas goodies for me :). At least they have SOMETHING to offer.

Ha! But you haven't told me that women are just basically worse than men, either. (Among other things, but that was really the straw->camel moment.)

(The mildly interesting thing being, of course, that the author was a woman. But women are entirely capable of misogyny; I don't buy that, if a woman says it about women, it's not offensive.)

I can think of two past examples you've given that might qualify, is there a new one?

It's a new one.

I don't want to go into the details because this is just a whine on 'it sucks when that happens,' and I don't want to argue the relative merits of this artist and her opinions, which is what happens when I get specific in public. But I hate the knowledge that I'll never be able to enjoy their stuff quite the same way again.

Yeah, no kidding. Meeting authors/artists/whatever has been mostly disappointing for me. Except Neil Gaiman. He was awesome.

Ursula K. LeGuin was amazingly awesome. Super sweet woman that you wish was your grandma. And as a bonus, she let me get my book signed even though they were all done and had practically closed up shop.

Ray Bradbury seemed ok too, but I didn't have as much personal interaction with him.

But yeah, both times I pretty much held my breath, expecting them to disappoint.

Richard Bach wrote a series of AWESOME books about spirituality/flying/all that sort of astral-projection-y soul-y stuff. They were like my whole mantra in junior high. But then I learned a while back that he divorced his "soulmate" that his whole Bridge Across Forever book was about. This was utterly depressing to me. Even though the impression given was that the divorce was amiable and peaceful, and mutual, he is now married to a woman half his age (he's in his seventies now) and it's hard to not think he turned into just a typical jerk because his wife hit 60. *sigh* I am re-reading the book, but the enchantment is a bit melted away now...
