Trying to decide which of the following to bring to the book club. In either case, the dish would be meatless; the contents would be half penne pasta and half broccoli and cauliflower; the top would be topped with mozzarella and parmesan.

(Important note: I'm not asking you to guess which would be more appealing to my book club. Just tell me which you'd rather have. I want to see if there's a clear preference either way.)

If you don't like either, you can skip this poll. And yes, I've already checked, and there are no relevant allergies, nor are any of them vegan. :)

Broccoli and cauliflower are yummy with cheese sauce. (Although I prefer barely blanched and dipped in hollendaise sauce. ::melts::)

Yeah -- I think if it weren't for the high vegetable content, the tomato sauce would be a clearer favorite for me, but cheese and brassicas just go so well together!

Well, you know how I feel about cheese. I know you don't want us to guess what your book club would want, but personal experience suggests that 90% of humanity has views on cheese that are diametrically opposed to mine (just going by the gasps of horror when I say I don't like the stuff.) So I suspect you should make the opposite of what I'd want. ::grin::

It's true in the general case that many people like cheese more than you do, but on the other hand, many people are watching their diet (and so would prefer the lower calorie/lower saturated fat/lower cholesterol tomato-based option). And some people who like cheese hate blue cheeses (like gorgonzola). So it's not quite true to say that the opposite of what you want would be a natural pleaser. ;)

There's definitely a middle ground. I like a modest amount of some cheeses, but I can't stand cream/cheese sauces. Also, many kinds of cheeses are pretty serious migraine triggers.

I think opinions on cream sauces are more polar, whereas red sauce may not be a total WINNAR in very many people's books, but it's pretty inoffensive.

That's exactly it. Cheese sauce tends to be an OMG HIT more often, but when it's not an OMG HIT it's more likely to be an 'eew.' Tomato sauce rarely hits either extreme.

My tummy hates rich cheese sauce, so even though I LOVE CHEESE (tm), I'm going with option number 1.

Very difficult to decide with such delicious choices.

I like ziti more and would have chosen it, but I have a tendency to splatter sauce. Therefore, for a group meal, I would choose white sauce over red. But both sound good.

I'd choose the cheese (and more cheese) for myself, but I tend to think tomato-based things make better foods to bring to events than cheese-based things. They're tastier after sitting at room temperature for a while. It's also been implied to me that it's nicer to people on diets to bring something tomato-based.
