I just fired off a message to the people at Raflyn Farms, a horse place about 30 minutes' drive from where I am that came well-recommended via dancinghorse's local sources. I made it clear that I'm essentially a total beginner, and would need to rent a horse for the lesson, and then asked what they had available.

Also, most places that offer lessons have horses suitable for the job. No worries there--a lot of us have warm memories of the "school horse" who put up with our beginner awkwardness.

Oh, good to know! I know I used a lesson horse when I learned to ride when I was thirteen (his name was Jester, and he was a very charming Appaloosa gelding), but I didn't know enough to know how usual that was.
