We used DOS at first, and my brother became proficient in it despite not being able to read yet, which is pretty impressive since it was all typed-text command-line stuff.
My first computer experience was using a teletype in the high school, connected to some mysterious place downtown with a "mini computer", most likely a big hulk of a machine with a powerful 64K of RAM, or some such.
I learned to program (Fortran) with Hollerith 80-column cards, the ones that required a #2 pencil to fill in, and Lord ha' mercy on thy soul if you filled in the wrong blank. Proofreading programs was a major pain in the ass - and probably led to my current skills as a proofreader, come to think of it.
