Anime Expo, Day One
Jul. 2nd, 2010 04:14 pm(I'll post again later with actual pictures and links; this is the 'posting from the bar of the
Wilshire' post.)
Day One was mostly scoping out the Artist's Alley and Dealer's Room.
For those who aren't familiar with the terminology: at anime cons (perhaps also at other kinds of cons? I don't know) the parts where you buy stuff are divided in two:
Artist's Alley is for fanartists and so on, people who sell you pictures of Cloud Strife looking badass or Hawkeye ditto, or Naruto making out with Sasuke, or adorable pictures of cat-rat-onigiri from Fruits Basket, or, my favorite, a steampunk Edward Elric being fitted with wings by a steampunk Winry (and this doesn't even get into the wide variety of crocheted Totoro, handmade flowered hairpins, and so on).
The Dealer's Room is where you buy things from larger producers, mostly but not always licensed stuff. This is where you buy your Riza Hawkeye miniature, your t-shirt with Etna from Disgaea, your boxed set of Baccano!, your plushie of Akamaru. The distinction between Dealer's Room and Artist's Alley, at Anime Expo, seems to be simply the price you're willing to pay—there are major fanart dealers in the Dealer's Room, for instance, so it isn't just that you're legitimately licensed.
I spent the day earmarking things I wanted to buy (TONS of fanart, plus the Tonton plushie from Naruto, and I may also pick up the Olivier figure from Fullmetal Alchemist), and taking pictures of people in costume.
I'll post pictures later, but the highlights were shirtless sharingan Sasuke (say that three times fast), who was both an accurate representation of Sasuke (down to the sharingan contact lenses) and, uh, very easy on the eyes. (The same cosplay group had a Fourth Hokage who had gotten a swirly light-up LED ball to represent the rasengan, which I thought was pretty freaking awesome.) And a really good Kakashi, complete with Icha Icha book and Pakkun plushie. And an ABSOLUTELEY FANTASTIC set of San, the Wolf Goddess, and the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke. And more. There will be pictures!)
Then we got a leisurely dinner.
Then we went to the AMV (Anime Music Video) contest, which was brilliant this year. I mean, really, unusually brilliant. It's usually enjoyable but the ratio of quality videos this year was higher than usual, I'd say. I'll post links later.
And that was Day One.
(Today I've been slow to get going, so Day Two will probably be pretty abbreviated. ;) )
