I was born twenty-eight years ago, in a hospital in Augsburg, Germany. (My parents were both in the army, although my mother never went back after maternity leave.) I've always liked my birthday: 11/11. Next year, 11/11/11, for which I will have to think of something awesome to do.

It's also Veteran's Day/Armistice Day, of course, and a serious holiday. I was born at ten in the morning, after some ungodly number of hours of labor, and so my mother used to say, "You took long enough, I thought maybe you were waiting for the eleventh hour and the eleventh minute, too." When I was a kid on the army base near Heidelberg, Germany, I got my birthday off from school every year.

So I associate my birthday with grey skies and fallen leaves, and also poppies and solemn yet hopeful parades. Along with presents and decorated cake (my mother always made me cakes covered in frosting flowers; those who saw the wedding cake pictures know what I mean) and getting to pick what we have for dinner that night, of course.

I was always a little cranky because one of my 'child's book of poetry' type of books had a poem about the months, and "dull November brings the rain" was the stanza for November. I never thought November was dull.
