I keep meaning to post about AMVs, because I know there are a lot of vidders and vid fans on my flist, and I come at the whole vid thing from the AMV (anime music video) side, and as far as I can tell it's completely different in both culture and aesthetic, and yet also awesome.

This is not that post!

This is a squee and sharing post, because I've been using AMVs to keep me writing on my NaNo project. And I think some of you would find them beautiful. Or fun. Or both!

The first is called "Fireflies," by soaringsalad, and it's an AMV that I watch when I'm stuck, or depressed, or in a bad mood, because it's very difficult for me to stay that way while watching. It just makes me happy. This is a multifandom video (as many AMVs are), featuring Howl's Moving Castle, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Cat Returns, Princess Tutu, Ponyo, Spirited Away, Kiki's Deliver Service, and Paprika, plus a few brief cameos of other things. You certainly don't need to know all of them to appreciate the AMV, though, or—frankly—probably even any of them. It's a lovely video, and also a... well, a joyful one. The song is "Fireflies" by Owl City. No warnings, I don't think.

(If there's a higher-res version of this video available, I can't find it. Sob!)

The second I know I've linked before, but I'm going to link it again, because it rocks. It's called "One-Eyed Fish," and it's by Rider4Z. It's an AMV for the anime of Mushi-shi, and it has the same strange and wistful and beautiful quality as the anime and manga. (You definitely don't need to know the anime/manga to appreciate the video, though; I picked up the series because of this video rather than the other way around.) The series is too episodic to really be spoilerable, I think. The song is "Last of the Wilds" by Nightwish, an instrumental piece which fits beautifully. There is one creepy bit involving a needle and a glass eye, but there's nothing that I find upsetting and I'm fairly squeamish.

If you have an animemusicvideo.org login (which IIRC is free) you can download a really beautiful high-resolution copy of this video from there: One-Eyed Fish.

The last video is called "Hold Me Now," by alkampfer81. It's a Princess Tutu video. I am told that it is quite spoilery, although to be honest I haven't actually seen Princess Tutu so I couldn't tell you. What I can tell you is that it's one of the most dramatic and conflict-ful videos I've ever seen... and pretty much all the drama and conflict is in dancing. It's beautifully done. The music is "Håll Om Mig," by Nanne Grönvall.

If you have an a animemusicvideo.org login, you can download this one in high-resolution as well: Hold Me Now.

And that's it until I get my actual AMV rec post put together. These three, though... if you have a few minutes and want to see something beautiful, pick one and check it out.

And as a bonus, something fun I meant to post for Halloween but forgot...

A Soul Eater AMV by Hagaren Viper, to the Marilyn Manson cover of "This Is Halloween." Like Nightmare Before Christmas itself, this video is kind of oogy and gross in bits ("red'n'black'n'slimy green") but not really scary. It's also a ton of fun.

If you have an a animemusicvideo.org login, you can download this one in high-resolution as well: This Is Halloween.

I admit I am biased -- I have never loved any other TV show the way I love Princess Tutu -- but I really think you would appreciate the series, especially if you like Hold Me Now. There's dramatic, conflict-filled dancing, and plenty of it, yes. There are also fairy tale conventions, picked up, reused, smashed into tiny bits and reassembled over and over and over again. There are dueling would-be protagonists. There are countless rewrites of classic ballets, and half of the rewrites are in the soundtrack. The damsel in distress is male. The hero is a tiny duck. The storyteller thinks he's too good for the fourth wall. Etc. Hold Me Now is gorgeous, yes, but it gets its gorgeousness and its awesomeness from the gorgeouser and awesomer canon.

Edit: I forgot to say, thanks for the links! I'll enjoy them. I just was too distracted by the moment of Must Spread Gospel! to remember to say so.

I love fanvids! They are one of the main ways I find new music.

Princess Tutu is one of the BESTEST THINGS EVER.

If you've seen Avatar and you like it at all, you really need to see this vid.

What [livejournal.com profile] rymenhild Said.

Princess Tutu is Truth About Writing, anime form, in the same way that The Unstrung Harp is Truth About Writing, Gorey form.

ETA: "Hold Me Now" is the best AMV I've seen, though I keep holding out hopes someone will make something extraordinary of The Place Promised in Our Early Days.

I just watched that first Fireflies link with Nora. It was really fun, and she liked spotting Totoro, Ponyo, and Kiki in it.
