Have acquired firelogs, two flashlights (upstairs and downstairs!), and sand.

It is a sign of my incipient terrifying domesticity that this seems like a really exciting shopping trip.

Tonight: beef soup that's sort of a descendant of my mother's goulash except that I don't have any paprika.

Use #1 is to put in the (hollow) legs of our downstairs plastic coffee table, to make it more stable and less likely to tip over.

Use #2, for what's left over when the legs are filled, is to put on the driveway in case of ice or snow.
