Hmm. Perhaps, as a non-fan of gore and pain depicted on screen, I will restrict myself to the comic. It's easier for me to handle written or comic pain/guts than movie. (As witnessed by the fact that I read and loved all of Sandman, including the bits in the Diner from Hell, but spent a middling-sized chunk of Serenity not looking at the screen, and Serenity is honestly pretty mild.)
The good news is the blood is very well-localized; you'd only need to cover your eyes for 2 bits, each a minute or less. I got 2gouda4u through it that way.
If you've read that Sandman story, nothing in the comic should pose any problem for you. I have a copy if you want to borrow it.
The first Sandman story is right on the edge of what I can handle, even for a comic book, but I managed that. So yeah. I'd love to borrow it -- I'll nab it when I finally remember to give you your Penny Arcade back. ;)
If the gore is localized, I may watch with someone I trust and just not look.
_I_ spend several segments of Serenity not looking at the screen. It's kind of amusing the extent to which i've memorized when to cover my eyes for the scary bits :)
