To the day of the longest night, and the promise of the sun's return.

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

"We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,"
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

          —Oliver Herford

At Christmas I no more desire a rose
Than wish a snow in May’s new-fangled mirth;
But like of each thing that in season grows.

          —William Shakespeare

Today (well, sunset tonight, which at this latitude isn't that long from now) is the first day of Hanukkah. It's also the day I get to open the first window on my Advent calendar. Mmm, chocolate.

We're going to see [livejournal.com profile] jmpava's mom today, whereupon I will make salmon and couscous and green beans and salad.

My mom sent us a bevy of cards: Christmas cards for me and [livejournal.com profile] jmpava's mom's partner (who are at least nominally Christian), Hanukkah cards for [livejournal.com profile] jmpava and [livejournal.com profile] jmpava's mom (who are Jewish). Since my mom is a fairly conservative Christian, I'm touched whenever she makes that gesture, since it's especially meaningful in that context. (She also sent us Rosh Hashana cards, earlier this year.)

Happy holidays, whatever you celebrate. (Even if it's "I guess it's December now" and/or Hogswatch.)

Every year for Thanksgiving, we travel over the mountains to visit the boy's father and his father's partner. They live in Eastern Washington, which is very different than Western Washington: the Cascades serve as a rainshield, which means that the lush, wet foresty growth stops once you get through the mountains. Eastern Washington is scrub-steppe, with rolling hills and valleys and few trees, and it's a lot colder than Western Washington.

So right now I'm sitting in front of the fireplace at Pav's dad's house, looking out the window at a heavy blanket of untouched snow on the hills. We came this year with friends ([livejournal.com profile] bellwethr and [livejournal.com profile] morganlf), and more friends will be coming soon. Our hosts always put out an amazing spread (right now I can smell the stilton cheese puffs browning in the oven). But mostly, it's a little island of calm at the beginning of the December-January madness, and I cherish it.

I'm no fan of colonialism or of the crimes of my nation's past, but I am a fan of harvest festivals. More than that, though, I think there's a great deal to be said for being thankful for what one has. The list is too long (and in some ways, too personal) for me to enumerate here, but it's very much on my mind today. And part of what I'm thankful for is... well, all of you. The Internet, and the relationships I made there, is a huge part of what kept me from going totally bananas in high school, and I'm glad I can still find people I care about and who care about me there to this day.

Happy Thanksgiving, if you celebrate. If you don't, have a lovely Thursday.

It was an excellent Thanksgiving. There was buttered bread and cheese and crackers and mushroom frittata and tomato soup and cranberry sorbet and pepper tuille and smoked turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy and buttered asparagus and green bean casserole and cranberry chutney and cornbread dressing and grits and pumpkin and buttered carrots and bread and butter and two kinds of pie and caramel-nut twists with peppermint cream. And white wine and red wine and coffee and tisanes.

I'm, perhaps, a little tipsy and very relaxed.

I am thankful for many things. Indeed, my life is so embarrassingly good that I feel a little awkward about it, and resolve every year to give more to charity, because I'm not sure I deserve life to be as good to me as it is.

But it is, and I thank God or the gods or the powers that be that it is, and hope it will continue to be so, and hope that my unusual and undeserved good fortune will expand outward to the people I love, and the people I don't know.

Gods all bless, everyone, and have a happy and productive and positive 2010.
