Today we had a truly splendid Farmer's Market haul. It's definitely spring now -- green leafy things everywhere, and the asparagus showed up.

First thing I got was a dozen fresh eggs -- I wanted large, but they were out, so I got jumbo for the price of large, which was a nice deal. Then we went onto a stand with dozens and dozens of bunches of fresh asparagus, where I got to choose thickness. I asked for thin-to-medium spears, since the thicker ones will still be around in May but the little thin ones will go away soon. Then we stopped at the foraged-food stand, where we picked up a pound of fiddlehead ferns and a bag of stinging nettles. ([livejournal.com profile] jmpava was startled by that -- "Nettles as in the things that bite your legs when you walk through weeds?" -- but I assured him that cooking deactivates their bite.) We got four heads of garlic from my favorite garlic stand. Then more sorrel and brussels sprouts greens, which I'm interested in trying. We ended with a stand where we got rutabagas, spinach, and parsley.

We also got a bunch of non-vegetable stuff: two kinds of cider, extra sharp cheddar, lavender honey (which I'm eager to try), emmer farro, and a tin of mango-lime green tea for making iced tea with.

After we went to the farmer's market, we walked to the nearby JoAnn Fabric. I'm planning on making a couple of long skirts to get back in the swing of things, so I picked out a couple of patterns and some crepe -- black and dark green -- to make two skirts with. It's currently being washed, upstairs.

I feel very domestic.
