Tonight I get to go home. It will be the first time I've been back in my house for sixteen days. This Saturday will -- barring disaster -- mark the first time I've been in my house for more than four consecutive days since December 18.

I am bloody tired, is what I am. Sick of beds that aren't mine, sick of eating out, sick unto death of people. I'm taking two days off work to sleep in, grocery shop, and try not to catch anything. I'm probably going to go turtlelike and not see anyone for a few weeks, either -- don't take it personally.

As a reward for dealing with all this, I'm buying myself a few books I've been wanting. I've also had an inexplicable urge to rewatch Sans Soleil, a beautiful and odd documentaryish thing I fell in love with in college, so I might buy that. (La Jetee is pretty good, too, though it gave me nightmares. In a good way! But still, nightmares.)

And sleep and read and sleep and read and sleep and sleep and sleep.

I'm sorry that I didn't get to see you while you were here (though it sounded like you were pretty busy)! But anyway good going-home-and-sleep!

I'm sorry I missed you, too! Really, there was so much work involved that week... I need to get back to SoCal some time this summer, so that I can be there and have time to see people.

I am in my warm little bed as we speak, thinking of pulling out the stuffed okapi I bought and having a snooze....

You love La Jetee too! ZOMFG I have never met anyone but ME who loves La Jetee. Well, people _pretended_ to after 12 Monkeys, but I loved it FIRST (culture vulture that I am). I have the book of the film! It's so gorgeous.

Yes! I saw it in college, in the Best Film Class Evar (same one in which I saw San Soleil, in fact, and Cocteau's Orphee), and I hadn't ever seen 12 Monkeys... and loved it. SO haunting. I just. The still images, and the one image that isn't still, and the future, and the future of the future... and the way it's all images and narration, just kills me.

Dude, that does sound like THE Best Film Class Evar. I saw it before 12 Monkeys, too!! (Okay usually I hate multiple exclamation points but that one was NECESSAIRE.) Loved it SO. SO. MUCH. I had dreams about it. And the poor bastard narrator. And the first time I saw the moving image I was _blown away._ It's just so so beautiful. (I resisted seeing 12M a looong time, because I love TJ so much. Well, also, Bruce Willis, whom I cannot stand. Altho I love Gilliam, and 12M is actually not that horrible. Not Bros Grimm-esque horrible, anyway.)

oh man, me too. I had the most haunting dreams about it -- not nightmare-nightmares where I wake up shaking, but the kind of lingering dreams I kept thinking about all day...

Once I got round to seeing 12 Monkeys, it didn't bother me. I think because it's such a different kind of movie than Jetee. It wasn't an attempt to make the same thing over again (which would have failed, and irritated me), it took the general idea and outline of the thing and made it into something else entirely, which tends not to bother me nearly as much.

Yes, exactly -- people were shocked when I actually saw 12M and liked it, let alone not-detested it (is that grammatically clear? SIGNS POINT TO NO), but mainly b/c it was such a different story, really. But TJ is so, so close to my heart, in a way 12M could never be. It's like a part of my mental DNA.

It's so wonderful. (And I try to explain it to people -- 'it's about memory and its absence, and travel, and time, and animals, and images, and fortune, and... and, um, there are owls, and a temple to cats, and this road in Iceland that turns into a road in the Netherlands, and there's a science fiction story in there, not buried but plainly evident, yet it's still a documentary...' -- and fail, utterly. Perhaps if I get it, I'll be able to convince [livejournal.com profile] jmpava to watch it with me, at least.)
