I'm currently on the lookout for good music for writing -- which is to say, either instrumental, or with lyrics in languages I don't understand. (Anything other than English. Even the other languages I know, I don't know well enough to comprehend while sung.)

So! Recommend me something, or several somethings. Movie scores are good, video game scores are good (as long as they're not too, uh, midi-tastic, if you take my meaning), various kinds of world music are good, 'old' music (like chant or the things the Mediaeval Baebes do) is good. I'm not so much looking for foreign-language pop music, but if you really like it, hey, I'll give it a try. What's your favorite instrumental/non-English-lyric music?

Real music? The monks of Keur Moussa.

Soundtracks? The Power of One, Steve Jablonsky's Transformers, The Last Samurai

Ray Lynch's song Ivory, and the rest of that CD.

The soundtrack to "The Rock" (the break-in-to-alcatraz movie with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage) is really good, as is the "Dances with Wolves" soundtrack. Both all orchestral.

Music to write to, hmmm, let me see.

The sound tracks to Far and Away (John Williams did the score, it is very lush and Irish, with Copeland overtones) and Braveheart (samething minus little Johnny Williams). In both scores the incidental music is fairly long and lush.
Hans Zimmer's score to the Last Samurai is beautiful (Hans Zimmer is pretty amazing). All of those have a very interesting themes. Like erinpie, I enjoy the sound track to Dances with Wolves as well (but it tends to get a little monotonous for me).

I'm a big fan of Irish solo harp when I let my mind wander.

The sound track to Sweet and Low Down is pretty interesting.

Ray Lynch is a very interesting new age composer.

Any of the Circus de soliel (sorry about the word-mangling) stuff is very good for yoga, not sure about writing.

Do you like electronica? Anything by Tomita is pretty cool. He is just ripping off classical music, but it is trippy.

In the classical range, I'm a big fan of Debussy (pretty much any of his stuff is pretty good to let the mind wander to). Appalachian Spring by Copeland is very beautiful. I like the Florida Suite by Delius.

for writing music, my two favorites are the score to the movie Playing By Heart (jazzy instrumental) and the Relaxing Rain Ambience (With relaxing music) CD by Nature Sound Series. Sometimes Massive Attack or Dead Can Dance works, but you have to pick through to find the instrumental/non-English-lyric songs. E.S. Posthumus is FANTASTIC and has no English lyrics. Oh, and I like Native American flute & drum music.

You could try Bill Evans or Dave Brubeck. And Kind of Blue is a jazz classic that shouldn't get in the way of your writing.

Amélie's soundtrack.

Buena Vista Social Club's album - peppy cuban music, good for background.
