We definitely have more books than bookshelf space. I haven't quite run out of bookshelf yet, but I can see already that we have too many books still in boxes to fit in the remaining space.

For now there are things I can do to ameliorate this (I can certainly fit them in a bit more tightly), and I know I'll be getting rid of some of these, but pretty soon we're going to have to figure out where on earth we can fit more bookshelves..... (Hm, possibly the upstairs hallway.)

Are you double stacking the books already? The shelves i have at least fit two rows of paperbacks perfectly. It makes looking for books a little more difficult, but not too bad as long as you've got some kind of organization, and doubling your (paperback) shelf space is no small thing :)

I've thought about it, but double-stacking (and its cousin, plaiding) really only works well if you keep your paperbacks with other paperbacks and your hardcovers with other hardcovers, and I prefer to keep all my Pratchett books together, all my Gaiman books together, et cetera. I may have to split them up by size, but I'm hoping to find another solution....

Plaiding?

And actually now that i look for the first bookshelf or two i've got hardbacks in the back row with paperbacks in front and it still fits (with the advantage of being able to see some of the hardback spines above the paperbacks.) I try to avoid getting paperbacks as much as possible so trying to synchronize the two rows wouldn't work very well for me, but if your mix is more 50/50...

Plaiding is kind of hard to describe, but it works like this: you put a row of paperbacks down normally until it's as wide as a paperback is tall. Then, on top of it, you lay down as many paperbacks as you can fit between the top of the books and the shelf above. Then, next to the upright books, you lay down as many paperbacks as you can fit and still fit a normal stack on top. Then you repeat. You get sort of a plaid pattern in the books, and you can fit many more on a shelf than you can with just a single layer, without having to put any books behind other books.

It looks sort of like this:

_______
=|||=|||=|||
|||=|||=|||=
-----------

But, again, only works if you segregate paperbacks.

You need one of these.

I was looking for a Roger Rabbit screenshot, but disturbingly enough, this looks just like my brother-in-law.
