We definitely have more books than bookshelf space. I haven't quite run out of bookshelf yet, but I can see already that we have too many books still in boxes to fit in the remaining space.

For now there are things I can do to ameliorate this (I can certainly fit them in a bit more tightly), and I know I'll be getting rid of some of these, but pretty soon we're going to have to figure out where on earth we can fit more bookshelves..... (Hm, possibly the upstairs hallway.)

Plaiding is kind of hard to describe, but it works like this: you put a row of paperbacks down normally until it's as wide as a paperback is tall. Then, on top of it, you lay down as many paperbacks as you can fit between the top of the books and the shelf above. Then, next to the upright books, you lay down as many paperbacks as you can fit and still fit a normal stack on top. Then you repeat. You get sort of a plaid pattern in the books, and you can fit many more on a shelf than you can with just a single layer, without having to put any books behind other books.

It looks sort of like this:

_______
=|||=|||=|||
|||=|||=|||=
-----------

But, again, only works if you segregate paperbacks.
