My friend, going back to school: I have a cinema theory class thing for my fine arts requirement this semester.
Me: Are they making you watch Vertigo?
Her: ...Yes.
Me: hahahahaha
Her: How did you know?
Me: They always make you watch Vertigo.

I took one cinema studies class. One. And watched Vertigo.

As another friend pointed out, "And then they make you read Mulvey. And then you want to break things."

Yeah.

If you get far enough, you realize that no one takes that crap seriously anymore. But you have to read it to be able to say why it sucks. And I don't know why, 30 years later, we're still giving it enough credence to continue paying any attention to it at all.

Funny -- I heard a rumor (from a professor) that her husband-at-the-time Peter Wollen (also a scholar) actually wrote "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema."
