The musical theater version of The Lion King is quite impressive, and very enjoyable, and tweaked things in a few very minor ways that nonetheless delighted me in a I-love-interesting-female-characters sense.

I hadn't noticed the gender balance shift at the time, but I can totally see it now that you pointed it out. The puppets & costumes were just awesome, too!
